- 4 large eggs
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 cups whole milk
- Ground nutmeg for garnish
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a bowl, whisk together eggs, sugar, salt, and vanilla until smooth.
Heat the milk in a saucepan until just warm, not boiling.
Slowly add warm milk to the egg mixture while whisking continuously.
Pour the custard into 6 ramekins or a baking dish.
Place ramekins in a larger baking pan and add hot water halfway up the sides.
Sprinkle nutmeg over the top.
Bake for 45–50 minutes or until a knife inserted comes out clean.
Remove from water bath, cool slightly, and serve warm or chilled.
- Use fresh eggs and whole milk for the creamiest texture.
- A pinch of cinnamon can be added for extra warmth.
