A quick and easy homemade cheese bread loaded with sharp cheddar cheese and a hint of garlic powder. Soft and tender inside with a golden cheesy crust, this bread is perfect as a side with soups, stews, or enjoyed on its own as a savory snack.

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- 4 tablespoons melted butter cooled
- 1⅓ cups buttermilk
- 2 large eggs
- 3 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan.
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, garlic powder, baking powder, salt, and baking soda. Stir in 2 cups of the shredded cheese.
In another bowl, beat melted butter, buttermilk, and eggs until combined.
Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and fold gently until just combined.
Pour the batter into the loaf pan and smooth the top.
Sprinkle remaining cheese on top. Cover loosely with foil.
Bake for 30 minutes, then remove foil and bake an additional 20 minutes until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
Cool in the pan for 10 minutes before removing to a rack. Slice and serve.
- Do not overmix the batter to keep bread tender.
- Use sharp cheddar for best flavor, but feel free to experiment with other cheeses.
- Store leftovers covered at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for longer storage.
