Ingredients

  • 8 cups finely chopped green cabbage
  • ¼ cup finely chopped carrot
  • tablespoons very finely minced yellow onion
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup whole milk
  • ¼ cup buttermilk
  • tablespoons lemon juice
  • tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  • Finely chop cabbage, carrots, and onion until almost rice-sized pieces (use a food processor or a sharp knife).
  • In a large bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, sugar, milk, buttermilk, lemon juice, vinegar, salt, and pepper until smooth.
  • Add cabbage, carrots, and onion to the dressing; toss to coat everything thoroughly.
  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours or overnight, stirring occasionally if possible.
  • Stir well before serving and enjoy!

Notes

Chopping the vegetables finely is key for authentic texture. Don’t skip the sugar—it balances the vinegar’s acidity. Best flavor is achieved after chilling overnight.
