Ingredients

  • cups milk
  • ¼ cup water
  • ¼ cup butter softened or melted
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast
  • 1 large egg
  • teaspoons salt
  • 4¼ to 4½ cups all-purpose flour
  • Additional melted butter for brushing

Instructions

  • Warm milk until steaming but not boiling; combine with water, butter, and sugar in mixing bowl.
  • Add yeast, let sit 5-7 minutes until foamy.
  • Mix in egg, salt, and 3¾ to 4 cups flour gradually. Add more flour as needed to form a soft dough.
  • Knead dough for 5-6 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Let dough rise in a greased bowl, covered, until doubled (about 1 hour).
  • Punch down dough and divide into 12 equal pieces; shape into balls.
  • Place rolls into a greased 9x13-inch pan, cover and rise until puffed (30-45 minutes).
  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake rolls for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  • Brush tops with melted butter and serve warm.

Notes

  • Use warm water and milk to properly activate yeast.
  • Don’t add too much flour; dough should be slightly sticky but manageable.
  • Brushing with butter after baking keeps rolls soft and shiny.
  • Store leftovers wrapped tightly; reheat before serving for softness.
